Trust System

The system proposed has people rating others for trustworthiness. If a closed group of people highly rate each other this should not change the opinion of others about the group.

What are the various types of peer-ratings that cover this term paper application and what are their pros and cons?

Compensation

The goal is to distribute the earnings in a way that rewards the people responsible for the success, and makes the participants feel it is fair.

Benefits:

  • The system is transparent - you will know why you get what you get.

Problems:

  • No clear determination of what money gets shared (profits, new profits)
  • No clear understanding (yet) of the CompanyFinancials
  • No metrics for judging an individual's contributions financially

Possible Compensation Systems

Paying users vote

The people who pay for the software get to vote on their favorite features (spell-check, regexp support, good manual, etc) and peer ratings determine who is responsible for the popular (and more rewarded sub-systems)

Cons
  • Users don't know about the work behind the complex systems
    • Peer-voting is supposed to address this
  • Hard to vote for 'better advertising' - doesn't reward good advertisers
Pros
  • Non-arbitrary - the people who pay money are the ones putting their money on the line, who else are we trying to please?

Highly Trusted Users Decide

All developers (everyone working on developing e, in any way) could be asked to allocate funds to all developers, then given a percentage of the actual funds to be allocated based on their trust level. The sum of everyone's dispersal would be used.

Cons
  • Developers could vote to pay themselves
    • And should. The public nature of votes would keep them honest.
  • No clear connection between increased profits and a larger share
Pros
  • Presumably developers have a better understanding of the work involved than users

  • Where is a full disclosure of financial info, etc
  • User privacy - who can see user (financial?) details
  • What powers would any 'employee' have to speak for the company
  • What actions are reserved for the founder? Could an employee terminate the business if they thought it was the most profitable avenue?
